From 25 May to 21 August 1992, the Omarska ‘death camp’ was one of the most notorious of the 677 camps in the Bosnian war. It was located on the site of an ironworks in a mining town in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina near Prijedor. Prisoners were mostly men. It is proven that thirty-seven women were detained, who were repeatedly raped and abused by several soldiers, investigators and also the commander of the station, e.g. in the bathroom of this building. The building where the rapes took place can be seen through the window. In addition to sexual services, the women also had to do housework (cooking, cleaning and washing, etc.). At night they were then taken out of the shared bedroom for ‘special duties.’
At all times the screams of the tortured could be heard from the White House. Thirty-two of the women were later released, but five women were killed: Mugbila Besirevic (economist), Edna Dautovic (student), Hajra Hodic (student), Velida Mahmuljin (teacher) and Sadeta Medunjanin (professor).
