Residential Building Lepa Brena

Apartments and houses where women were imprisoned were used as brothels by groups of soldiers, mostly members of paramilitary formations. One such place where Muslim women and girls were held was an apartment in this building called Lepa Brena. Radomir Kovac, called ‘Klanf,’ lived there. He was a member of the Dragan Nikolic unit in the Army of the Republic of Srpska (VRS). Jagoš Kostic, also a VRS soldier, lived with him in the apartment. Another apartment on the fourth floor was used by Radomir Kovac.

With Kovac’s consent, other soldiers also took girls and women there and raped them. In addition, captive women had to clean, cook, provide the men with food and drink, wash their clothes and carry out all the orders from Kovac and Kostic. They were not allowed to have any contact with the outside world. A neighbour, DK, sometimes brought them food when Kovac was absent for seven days or more. Kovac held girls and women captive in this apartment from 30 October 1992 to 25 February 1993.
